Our History

1986

Rugby in Jordan began around 1986, primarily among expats. The team first participated in the Dubai Sevens in 1987. The sport then went into hibernation following the first Gulf War and was revived in 1992 by expats and the British Embassy, alongside a growing Jordanian player base.

1990’S

The early days saw games played on sand pitches before moving to the King Abdullah Trophy, where Jordan Rugby F.C would face teams from Cyprus, Lebanon, Egypt, and even Fiji.

2007

Union officially formed, became a member of the Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC), and an associate member of Asia Rugby.

2012

Clubs were formed, and the first domestic competition was established.

2014

The youth in school system was introduced under the “Get into Rugby” program, introducing over 1,000 kids to the sport.

2016

Jordan Rugby obtained Asia Rugby full membership status.

2019

Jordan’s Men’s Sevens team emerged as champions of the Arab Sevens Cup, enhancing Jordan’s stature on the competitive rugby stage.

2020

Jordan Rugby obtained World Rugby associate membership status after significant development in the sport.

2021

COVID-19 implications impacted the sport ecosystem and growth in Jordan and the World.

2023

Post-COVID recovery saw a return-to-play strategy, positioning the union stronger than ever, sealing partnerships, and establishing the Jordan Rugby brand as a key player in the Jordanian sporting industry.

2024

Jordan Rugby reaches a powerful milestone, achieving full membership in World Rugby and reaching the pinnacle of growth and development. This moment signifies the culmination of years of strategic planning, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence, opening new doors to opportunities that will further elevate the sport in the Kingdom.
